Stann on Woodley’s Key To Victory: “When he decided to move forward, he did well.”

Los Angeles – The following quotes and videos are from tonight’s FS1 UFC 209 POSTFIGHT SHOW hosted by Karyn Bryant, with Brian Stann and Kenny Florian providing analysis. Megan Olivi conducted interviews.

FOX UFC analyst Brian Stann on Tyron Woodley vs. Stephen Thompson: “This wasn’t the most exciting fight. When Woodley chose to go for one takedown, what happened? He landed it and got Thompson down. When he went after Thompson in the fifth round, he knocked him down. Stylistically Tyron made this tougher than I thought it should be. He had the advantage with his ability to score the takedowns and his power. He was just not aggressive enough. Tyron had the speed, power and wrestling advantage, which I think would be the perfect style to fight Wonderboy. Maybe for Woodley, there was too much focus on conserving energy and not on being offensive. When he decided to move forward, he did well. Thompson had more to worry about Woodley, than Woodley did of Thompson. The two styles don’t actually make for a good fight.”

FOX UFC analyst Kenny Florian on Tyron Woodley vs. Stephen Thompson: “Both guys respected each other and with both being counter strikers, we got a slow fight with both waiting to counter the other. Wonderboy was hesitant and didn’t want to get taken down. Woodley was playing the patience game. Woodley was rolling the dice with his game plan tonight and he came out lucky.”

Tyron Woodley on performance: “It’s tough fighting someone the second time around. It was tough to move in on him. I knew I had to go for the kill the last round and got it done.”

Woodley on if fighting tentatively was his game plan: “This wasn’t part of the game plan. We were going to do more takedowns. But I was told the front leg in a karate stance is the fast leg, it’s tough. He was moving that so quickly. You have to do what you have to do to get it done.”

Woodley on his performance: “I’ve never been doubtful of my abilities. I was weighing risk versus reward. In the fifth round, that shouldn’t have been the only time I exploded like that. I should have done that each round. I’m still a young champion. This was a learning performance. I’ll go back and get better.”

Woodley on listening to the scores: “This time I actually listened. In the end, I’m still the champion. I could be in the locker room all shook up if I didn’t. It wasn’t my greatest fight, but I’m not walking away giving myself a C-.”

Woodley on what’s next: “I’m shooting a movie next week, then taking a vacation with the family. I’m sure my manager will figure out what’s next with the UFC soon.”

Stephen Thompson what he thought when the scores were read: “I thought I had it. I thought I won three rounds. I was being cautious in this fight. I knew he was going for the takedown. I was just trying to pick him apart. I could have thrown a little more. But he’s got a big right hand and great takedowns, so you have to be cautious.”

Florian on Lando Vannata vs. David Teymur: “Vannata looked good in the first round and almost finished Teymur, but Teymur stood in there and answered back every time. Teymur is tough as nails. Vannata was standing up straight and getting hit a little too much.”

Stann on Rashad Evans vs. Daniel Kelly: “Kelly was really smooth, and as the fight went on, he found a place for his left hand. We expected him to do well in the clinch and he used his judo throws. Every time Kelly is out there, he’s gaining fans. He was talking about that knee being basically disconnected, but Rashad never even kicked it during the fight. I tell you, he may not be working toward a title, but I’m tuning in to watch Kelly again and see what he does.”

Stann on what Evans should do next: “I don’t think Rashad needs to take any more damage. He moved down to 185 because he thought he could move back toward the title. After this fight, I don’t see him doing it. Maybe he should walk away.”

UFC president Dana White on how he scored Woodley vs. Thompson: “I had it 3-2 for Wonderboy. I didn’t think it was going to be a draw. One of the judges scored the last 10-8 and that’s insane. But the fans and I are not the judges. Tyron is the champ. The judges called him the winner.”

White on Overeem beating Hunt: “I didn’t think the fight was going to happen. Overeem had food poisoning and went to the hospital today. But he wanted to fight tonight. I have so much respect for him. And he knocks out Mark Hunt feeling that way.”

White on if the UFC will rebook Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson: “I don’t know. We have to see how Khabib will rebound. It’ll take him a while to heal from this weigh cut.”
