Edwards on Cormier’s victory over Johnson: “I don’t know why Johnson would try to wrestle.”

Los Angeles – The following quotes and videos are from tonight’s UFC 210 POSTFIGHT SHOW on FS1 hosted by Karyn Bryant, with Yves Edwards and Kenny Florian providing analysis. Megan Olivi conducted interviews.

FOX UFC analyst Yves Edwards on Daniel Cormier vs. Anthony Johnson: “I don’t know why Anthony Johnson would try to wrestle Cormier, who rode him in the first fight they had? I have no idea why he didn’t let his hands go? He had some success early, but I don’t know why he didn’t disengage. Cormier was able to push him against the fence. Rumble couldn’t get the separation. Cormier was making Rumble do all the work with the wrestling attempts. With Cormier on top of Rumble, he had no offense to escape. Wrestling is very tiring. Cormier was able to take advantage of him.”

FOX UFC analyst Kenny Florian on what made the difference between Cormier and Johnson: “What was surprising was that Anthony Johnson was engaging the wrestler. Cormier was ducking into his kicks, but once he got Johnson down, he was able to control him. Johnson just looked like he had no clue what he wanted to do. We knew this was a position Cormier was going to be able to get in to. With Johnson being afraid of Cormier’s takedowns, maybe he tried to go offensive with his takedowns and use his wrestling against Cormier.”

Daniel Cormier on his performance: “They can all get this lyrical masterpiece. I’m not going to beg for cheers. At the end of the day I get the job done. If they don’t like me, they don’t like me.”

Cormier on if he was surprised Johnson tried to wrestle with him: “It did surprise me, but then I said ok, I hung on him and I knew I’d get him. He’s done so well knocking people out and when it doesn’t go his way, he goes back to wrestling and I knew I’d get him.”

Cormier on if he had a broken nose: “He kicked me square on the nose with his shin. I have to go to the doctor and get a CT scan to see what’s up with it.”

Cormier on if he’ll fight Jon Jones or Jimi Manuwa next: “I say over and over, if you’re in class and you get suspended, you can’t talk about a fight. Jimi doesn’t want to fight me. If he wants to fight me, it’s a one-round fight.”

Cormier on his weight cut: “It was very tough. It was the toughest cut. I’m getting older. I’ve got a better nutritionist now, but if I’m going to defend the title, I’ve got to make the weight.”

Anthony Johnson on his decision to retire: “It’s been in my mind for a while. I gave another venture my word. They’re waiting on me. I’m grateful for the journey. If I don’t like it, I can still come back. I just have to leave right now. In due time, people will know what it is.”

Johnson on wrestling Cormier: “I was trying to put him in an uncomfortable position, but I made a mistake and he capitalized on it.”

UFC president Dana White on if he was surprised Johnson tried to wrestle Cormier: “I was sitting next to Jimi Manuwa and asked him what he was doing?”

White on what he thought of Cormier’s performance: “Cormier’s nose is definitely broken. It’s a testament to him. He’s 38 years old and he did it the way he said, finishing him in the second round.”

White on who will fight Cormier next: “Jimi Manuwa isn’t on suspension, but Jon Jones is. We’ll see.”

White on Johnson retiring: “I don’t think he should retire. But on the other hand, if the R word even pops in your head, you shouldn’t even fight. I would never try to talk someone out of retiring. In this game, you have to be all in it.”

White on the Weidman – Mousasi controversy and if you’ll set up a rematch: “Well, Mousasi is a free agent. The New York State Athletic Commission is really new, but the referee made the mistake. It looked like that was the way the fight was going. I say it all the time, you’re facing the judges and ref and your opponent and you have to keep fighting to win.”

Edwards on Jones vs. Cormier: “Jon has been gone a long time. A guy like Cormier can close the skill gap that was between them. It’s an opportunity to go after him next. Jones’ experience bar isn’t getting higher right now with his layoff. Jones didn’t look good against Ovince Saint Preux. The guy who fought OSP won’t beat Daniel Cormier. When Jon Jones comes back, I think Cormier will have an advantage.”

Florian on Jimi Manuwa matching up against Cormier: “He’s got similar knockout power to Johnson, but he’s susceptible to wrestling. He’s been training with Alexander Gustafsson in Sweden. When he beat OSP as easily as he did, people really noticed.”

Jimi Manuwa on talking to Cormier after the fight: “He was trying to run some stupid jokes and pick on me, but you can’t do that to me. With me it’s one punch and the kill. He’s trying to get in my head. It shows he’s noticing me. I can tell he’s rattled. It’s my time now.”

Florian on Chris Weidman vs. Gegard Mousasi controversy: “When you make a decision, you can’t go back and change it. The ref said it was an illegal knee, then someone told the ref that it was legal and Weidman can’t continue. You can’t make a decision in the Octagon and then change it. Both these guys lose. It was very confusing. Weidman will probably appeal it. These guys should fight again.”

Weidman on the controversy: “It’s pretty frustrating. I don’t want to disrespect Gegard. They told me it was illegal and told me I had five minutes. You can’t change it afterward. I want an immediate rematch and I’m going to appeal it. I want to get three rounds against him and finish him. I want the right thing to happen.”
